*whew* well we finally had our first meet of the season and lo and behold it was 60 degrees and sunny out. 1st time since last october that we've had that high a temp. And a beautiful tailwind as well. Yeah! I was giddy all day in anticipation of the Westborough PV crew taking on the vaulters from Shrewsbury. The season opener. Ahhhh nothing like it. Speaking of season openers y'all gotta give mad props to Hideo Nomo who pitched a no-hitter in his first start in a Red Sox uniform. Watch out - we no longer have to rely on Pedro Martinez and a heavy dose of prayers... Back to the story - the ladies swept 1-2-3 at home. Then I rushed over to Shrewsbury to catch the end of the guys vault. Turns out we had quite a few PR's among the JV's (we only jumped 6 out of 10 gals and 8 out of 16 guys) but the story of the day was our Vietnamese Vaultn' Vreak - Van Truong who PR'd at 11'6 to inch even more close to that Vietnamese national record he's trying for (I believe it's currently at 13'01.50" if I'm not mistaken). He came over 2 years ago and retaiend dual citizenship. Great kid. One of the sweetest takeoffs I've seen. Ahhh. Nothing like it. Spring is here. Life is worth living again. Nuff said. TONS of results for ya here - enough to choke a large dog or a smallish horse or a medium sized goat... "Daddy would you like some sausage..." - that ad for Tom Green's new movie looks absolutely bizarre, but that line and the organ music and the sausages on strings all over the room just crack me up... |

"Yes Virginia there IS no Santa Barbara Beach Vault this year..." posted by Bubba Sparks "Wellllllllllllll, sad but true. I spoke to 1960 Olympic Silver Medal winner and "On Track" owner, Ron Morris today while in search for a pole for Lesa Kubishta's (14' 4" / 4.37m) sister, April. In the course of his always outstanding service, I inquired about this year's edition of the Beach Vault. He informed me that beach availability conflicted with times that the elites could be in Santa Barbara, so there would be a hiatus THIS year but would be back stronger than ever next year. NOW, we at UC Irvine can't compete with the Beach Vault BUT we COULD help them. Circumstances may lend themselves to us having a 2nd pit. If Brooks and On Track want to supply an additional runway for the day, I would love to have a mid June Vault Fest (9th or 16th) complete with BBQ. ALL proceeds would go to the Beach Vault!!! Sound good? Let me know!! THANKS!!! Bubba Doug Sparks" ----- posted by Mustang Mike : "After going from 9 vaulters spring before last to 32 last season and down to only 22 this year, I can relate to what your spring is like so far. Have fun with them! Mike" ----- posted by the Georgia Peach : "Thanks goes to Thomas Bynam for the information on Georiga h.s. records. Let's be sure to give credit to the guy who recently leaped to the top of the state alltime best at 15-10---Brad SMITH of Franklin County. Great work Brad!" ----- From the Stupid Idea Department - There was discussion on the PVCanada mailing list about the two-attempt rule being used in Grand Prix II meets in Europe this summer. Ugh! "Dear friends, Following the IAAF Council Meeting in Seville, I am able to advise you that the Council has decided to proceed to experiment with the following technical rule in the Grand Prix II Meetings: Horizontal jumps and throwing events: each competitor to have two trials, with the best eight to have a further two trials. High jump and pole vault: each competitor to have a maximum of two attempts at each height. Track events-false starts: competitors to be disqualified after one (rather than two) false start. May I ask you your usual co-operation in order the athletes are informed about these changes. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require further information. Best regards, Sandro Giovannelli" |

----------------------------------------------------- Warlick talks big, but fails to set pole vault record ----------------------------------------------------- AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Alicia Warlick came to the Texas Relays with a world record on her mind. She was going to pole vault higher than any woman in history. Big talk. But a big wind and an inconsistent approach knocked down any of those hopes. She cleared 14-feet 1 1/4 inches Friday, but finished well short of the American and world outdoor record of 15-2 1/4 set last year by Stacy Dragila. She would have sounded like a braggart had she not been so serious. Had she cleared 14-7 1/4 , Warlick said, the world record would have fallen soon after. "I was going for it," said Warlick, who has cleared the best outdoor mark in the world so far this year at 14-9. "I just wasn't doing what I work on in practice. I should have been much higher." Her bravado probably comes from her age and her potential. Warlick went to Kingwood High School near Houston and competed at Stanford. Now, she's with the California-based Santa Monica Track Club. And at 23, she's a veteran of her sport despite competing in just her third outdoor season. Long a men-only event, the NCAA first sanctioned the pole vault as an official women's event in 1998. Warlick said she never considered vaulting until 1997. Before that, she was a hurdler. "I didn't want to run that far," she said. "I was a good all- around athlete, and thought I would try it." She said the pole vault is good for women's track and field. "It was dominated so long by men," she said. "People are surprised by what women are doing." Warlick doesn't expect Dragila's record to stand very long. More and more women are competing in the pole vault. Texas, one of the nation's premier women's teams, has its first-ever women's vaulter this year, freshman Jenna Vaughn. And the University Interscholastic League has voted to make girls pole vault a state championship event next year at the high-school level. "My intentions are to break the world record," Warlick said. "I think we're going to go higher and higher until we hit a wall, probably about 17 (feet)," she said. The crowd at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium expected a duel between Warlick and NCAA record-holder Tracy O'Hara of UCLA. O'Hara set the college mark of 14-7 1/4 on the same track last year and expected to do well here again. But a stiff tail wind seemed to disrupt many of the vaulters, including O'Hara, who failed to clear 13-5 1/4 . It was a clear disappointment for O'Hara, who said she expects to reach 15 feet this year and Win the national championship. "Can we make this short?" O'Hara asked reporters after her failed vaults. "I don't feel like talking." Because Warlick was competing as an unattached athlete, Arizona's Amy Linnen was declared meet champion with a vault of 13-5 1/4 . The mark automatically qualified her for the NCAA championships. Unattached athletes are allowed to compete, but only college athletes are declared meet champions. ----- VaultnGus sez : "I was debating whether to post these next two articles or not for not only do they shine a bad light on our sport but I also believe in 'innocent until proven guilty'. I decided to post 'em but I'm going to blur out all references to their names and school..." --------------------------------------------------------- Police say ... pole vaulters arrested on burglary charges --------------------------------------------------------- April 4, 2001 (AP) -- Two pole vaulters on .... track and field team were arrested Wednesday on charges they burglarized concession stands at the track and baseball stadiums. University police said they were ... and .... They were arrested by a campus police officer who said he found them inside the concession stand at ... about 3 a.m. Wednesday, said ..., a spokesman for the police department. They also are accused of burglarizing an open-air concession tent at ..., he said. Both were charged with one felony count of burglary, one felony count of theft and stealing a fire extinguisher. They were turned over to the ... Sheriff's Office. ----------------------- ... bite out of crime ----------------------- Two ... pole vaulters might finish their ... careers with track records they'd rather not have. ... and ... probably wished they were sprinters when they were caught around 3 a.m. yesterday inside the ... track concession stand, and police say they weren't there to make a midnight food run. They were charged with burglary - they are suspected of breaking into the baseball field's concession stand, as well - and another count of theft. Apparently they knew the heat was coming, because they also stole a fire extinguisher. |

"Warlick came in talking world record, but it wasn't to be. She
made 4.30 by at least a foot. Attempted 4.45 and put a foot on it
twice but fell on the bar both times. NOTE TO PACER: Give her
some Carbons, those Skypoles just aren't cutting it. Amy Linnen
looked AMAZING. She made 4.10 by a foot and a half and totally fell
apart at 4.25. She's muscled up quite a bit...no longer looks like
a Miss Ethiopia Beauty Pageant contestant. That title goes to
O'Hara. She looks like she's lost 20 lbs. Down to like 85lbs now.
Dutoit moved to 15' poles just like she did at nationals when the
bar got to 4.25 and couldn't roll them over. She could have made
it if she stayed down on the shorter poles."

"There were at least 2 very bad officiating calls in this division.
One was on one of the Purdue girls. She cleared it (don't remember
what ht.) by a foot all the way around, her pole obviously was
blown by the wind into the bar and she was charged with a miss.
Same thing happened to Arthun. The exact opposite happened to
Steiner in the A division, she knocked the bar off with her hand
and got a no-jump call because of the wind. "

"Pauli looked good. He came very close to 5.80 (19-0 1/4). He was
over by about 4 inches on his second jump but fell on the bar. He
bailed on his other 2. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Hunter
is for real. I've never seen such a consistent vaulter (yeah, I'm
still talking about Hunter). Every jump he had about 19' in hip
height. I really don't know how he missed 5.65 on his first two.
Literally his shirt barely brushed it on the backside both times
and the bar rolled off. 3rd time, he crushed the pole and kicked
off the bar. Eshbach looked good also. He put 8 inches on 5.45,
then went to a bigger pole, which wasn't necessary. First time down
he cleared it and the bar fell after he was in the pit. Next 2
weren't very good. He does win the award for best hair. About 50
1-inch ponytails. Hansen looked good at the lower bars. He was over
5.55 but it rolled off. I thought the wind took it, but he got a
red flag. Callaway actually looked good also. He put height on 5.45
on one jump. McLain looked good also. Made 5.30 on a terrible jump
with about 9 inches to spare. Then tried to move up to a pole that
was a little too much at 5.45."

"Walters made 5.45 easily and clean. Didn't really take a good
shot at 5.50. McDonald broke a pole on his 2nd attempt at 5.15
and thus missed his next 2 attempts. McLean had a heartbreaker
attempt at 5.45 after setting a PR of 5.30. He was in the pit a
good second before it rolled off. Mitchell boomed 5.15 by a foot
as usual, and as usual couldn't make 5.30. Chappell looked really
good but got psyched out at 5.30 and ran through. Mumme made
15'11 by 2 feet but needed his standards up at least 15cm at 5.00
and thus fell on the bar 3 times."

My 8th grade girl, Kadi Reid, from Centerpoint in Glenwood, AR jumped 10'0" today on her first attempt. She is the first Jr. High female vaulter in Arkansas to break the 10 foot barrier so I'm pretty excited and had to email you again. Stephanie Irwin, a 9th grader from Mt. Ida, Ar, whom I also coach made 9'6" with no misses. She just got a new pole in and it was the right one because she had at least a foot on the bar. She has only been vaulting since June and is still lets the pressure of clearing a new height get to her. They both missed 11' and dropped it to 10'9" which she cleared on her first. Adamek is just coming back after having complete knee reconstruction on her takeoff knee. She was jumping near 12' last summer when she tore her knee up. She's going to A&M next year. Look for a lot of good bars next year. All but 3 or 4 of these girls are first year jumpers." Looks like he could jump 16'9" maybe. As winner of the B division, Kennedy jumped in the A division also. Since he only had about 3 jumps in him today, he passed until 15'6" and made it easily on his first. Then put a foot on 16', but didn't penetrate very well. Next 2 were the same. Most has the most talent in the field, but he was on way too small of a pole. Could have went up 10 lbs easily. He's far better on the runway than 90% of all vaulters, period. Thames didn't look good at all. I don't know if he's been injured or what. His first jump at 15'0" wasn't close. Second jump he pulled his hamstring and called it a day. McFarling also pulled a hamstring and quit. I could've sworn he made 15'0" before he got hurt, but he's listed without a mark."
