4.20 Canadian Record Reports
Doug "Bubba" Sparks Reports:
Went to UCLA today (March 31 2002) for a three
way plus some open jumpers. HUGE tailwind
waning somewhat by the end. Tracy O'Hara won
the collegiate at 4.10m (13' 5
1/4") The open was won at 4.20m (13' 9
1/4") on misses by Mary Sauer with
Stephanie McCann getting a new Canadian Record
at the same height!! Mary,
Steph and Tracy all made 4.10m on their 2nd,
all with about 10 cm to spare
(4"). I don't know WHAT happened but Mary
and Steph both BOOMED 4.20m clean
by at least 20 cm (8"). Mary was the only
one close at 4.30m with a nice
3rd attempt. They were sharing a series
of Ms. Stic Carbons. CONGRATS!!!

Gerry Swan Reports
Los Angels, California: March 31, 2001
Stephanie McCann of the Valley Royals Track Club,
Abbotsford, BC
established a pending Canadian record in the
women's pole vault on Saturday
at a meet held at the University of Los Angeles.
McCann cleared 4.20 metres to exceed the existing
Canadian National record
of 4:15 set by Trish Bernier in 1998.
"It's about time," stated an excited McCann who
endured a 2000 season that
was plagued with injuries. McCann's new
Coach, Vince Beresford, is
convinced that McCann can go much higher.
"Stephanie had some very good
attempts at 4:30 and there is little doubt in
my mind that better things
are in store for her," stated Beresford.
Just three weeks ago, McCann went
4.11 metres to break her own BC record.
McCann intends to compete in the Harry Jerome
meet in June. "I would love
to have a record performance in my home town
of Vancouver," said Stephanie.

... From heptathlete to 3.70 metres in the Pole Vault!
After two years at Simon Fraser University where she competed for the Clan
track team as a heptathlete Stephanie McCann decided she needed a change
of both
event
and scenery. While at SFU under the coaching of
Zenon Smiechowsk, Stephanie had developed into a competent multi event
athlete who contributed valuable points to the Clan at NAIA Championships
and won a bronze medal in the heptathlon at the1997 Canada Games.
Last
summer McCann began experimenting with the pole vault and found this she
had the flexibility and speed needed to achieve success in it. She
then sought out the services of pole vault coach Jana Bronz who took McCann
under her wing and found a place for her to vault. In addition,
once or twice per week she would travel to Bellingham, WA, to work
out with coach Dick Henrie who conducts sessions for some 30 vaulters of
both genders. "Improvement seemed to come very quickly and to my
surprise I was able to vault 3.30 metres and achieved a height of 3.20m
to win the vault at the BC Championships. Unfortunately, McCann's
season came to an abrupt end at the National Championships where on one
jump she landed outside the pit and severely injured her leg.
What
are her goals for this coming season? "First of all I want to stay
healthy and be able to win the vault and score points in multi events at
the NAIA Nationals. After returning home I plan to compete in the
Canadian Championships and this time utilize the pit for my landings.
Then I will see what I can qualify for after that."
